Sue and I were friends through high school and had many great adventures together. She got her driver's license before me and had her family's rambler for many adventures. We even worked together after high school for several years at the IRS, so our computers were humming with stories. She had received the 50th reunion invitation and had gotten really excited about coming down from Canada to catch up with many old friends! We will miss her. She died suddenly and peacefully in her sleep. |

I remember Sue marching in front of our band, in her majorette uniform with those tassles swinging from her white boots. We had heard that she was planning to come to this, our 50th reunion, but it was not to be. She will be remembered with a smile, not a hug.

Kenneth was a good friend. I may have spent more time with him than any other person in high school. We double dated on many occasions. Kenneth and his brother David had one of the largest paper routes in the state for the AJC. I would go on the route with him almost every day. He would drive and I would stuff boxes. Once, we took our dates on the Sunday morning delivery. Papers and girls were piled in the back. They were pretty hardy. It is difficult not to get sick with the smell of ink and the stop and start driving. ![]()

Jan DonaldsonNovember 10th, 1943 - March 22nd, 2019
|
|
Jan Donaldson, of Helena, MT, died on March 22, 2019, following a short illness. She was born in Alliance, OH, on November 10, 1943, the eldest child of Dorothy (Streit) and Alan W. Donaldson. Jan was a thoughtful, fun-loving soul, fiercely devoted to justice and decency. In August 1983, Jan and Mary Anne founded a comprehensive clinic in Helena (MT) serving children with neurologic problems in Montana and neighboring states. The practice grew to include experts in children’s physical, speech, language, and complex learning problems, and provided week-long clinics in three other Montana locations for families who could not always travel to Helena. After retiring from the medical practice, Jan ‘n Mag (as they were often called) camped and explored many mountains and streams, enjoying the birds and critters of Montana and beyond. Jan still kept a hand in medicine as the first Executive Director of the Montana Chapter of the Academy of Pediatrics. She also helped initiate a pediatric nurses’ group with the national Child Neurology Society. Closer to home, she served on the board of Montana Shares. Jan’s creativity was expansive: she was a passionate gardener, gifted quilter, talented baker, and a voracious reader. She donated handmade quilts, pillowcases, napkins, wall hangings, and homemade jams, vinegars, and baked goods to local organizations for women, children, and families, and gifted them to loved ones near and far. Jan’s family thanks longtime friend Mary Runkel, R.N.; the nurses and staff at St. Peter’s cancer center, oncology floor and Hospice; supportive friends and colleagues who traveled from afar; and the loving communities who carry on Jan’s legacy of service to the poor and underserved. <span 10pt;"="" "helvetica","sans-serif";="">Family and friends will hold a celebration of Jan’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Jan requested that donations be made to Montana Shares and to the ACLU of Montana. ![]()

Katherine E. Davis of Hamden died at Connecticut Hospice in Branford on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 from a brain tumor. Davis was a psychotherapist in private practice in New Haven for more than two decades. A specialist in child mental health, she also treated adults of all ages and couples. She became an early practitioner of EMDR, an evidence-based therapy for PTSD and related conditions, and later an educator and consultant to other clinicians in EMDR therapy. Her time was increasingly devoted to volunteer work as an EMDR trainer for the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Program in order to expand use of this therapy in non-profit and public clinics. In recognition of her efforts, she received the Social Worker of the Year award from the Connecticut Association of Social Workers in 2010 and the national EMDR Humanitarian Assistance program award for outstanding voluntary service in 2011. Before entering private practice, she had been clinical director of the former Hamden Mental Health Service for many years. Educated in Georgia State University and Tulane University, she came to New Haven from Columbus, OH, in 1969 as a pediatric social worker at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She was one of a small group of child specialists who drafted Connecticut's first child abuse law. At Hamden Mental Health Service, beside general oversight of clinical services, she developed police training programs and community mental health outreach projects, including adult courses at Hamden High School. At one time she appeared weekly at midday on WNHC-TV to discuss children's mental health issues. She leaves her husband, Robert Gelbach; daughters Rebecca Dworkin and Amy Larkin Gelbach; son Scott Dworkin; sister Deborah Methot; brother Pryor Davis; stepson Jonah Gelbach; and grandson Henry Gelbach. My two favorite Harry stories both took place when we lived in Charlotte, only a couple of months apart. He was planting a flowering shrub next to the back door and accidently chopped the telephone line in two with the post hole digger. The best part was when he told me to call the telephone company (this was in the 70's - no cell phones!). My other favorite story was a Sunday morning at breakfast. Both his parents and mine had come up for the week-end. We were all sitting at the dining room table having breakfast when I saw my car rolling down the drive-way. I looked around and asked who was in my car and Harry jumped up, made a bee line for the back door, ran down the drive, jerked the door open and managed to stop the car. Scott, who was four at the time, was behind the wheel. He had let off the emergency brake! I don't believe I ever saw Harry move quite that fast before or after! I still remind Scott of that.
From Phil Warlick on August 27th, 2011
My favorite Harry story was when we lived on the same street in Charlotte, NC. We discovered this several weeks after we moved. Harry, I and another neighbor took a trip to the outer banks with my boat. We spent a day fishing offshore in Wilmington, NC where we caught a fair number of Mackerel. We left and took the ferry across to Ocracoke Island, then set up our camp. We had brought all the comforts of home, a very large tent, a shelter tent, folding table and several coolers of ice. We looked like the circus. That evening Harry starting cooking the fish and hushpuppies. We had enough food for several dozen. So, we invited our neighbors to join the feast. One young couple had spent the summer there and didn't buy ice because it cost too much. Harry fed the masses. When we were cleaning up, Harry said, "If I had had more bread, I could have started a movement."

Carol meant the world to me and it's hard to live without her. She was always by my side through thick and thin she helped me. Now that she is gone my life is hard to live. It's hard to breath and it's hard to see, and it's hard to think about anything but her. Even though her love will shine in me forever, it's still hard not to look for her hand to hold. Even though she is not here with me, I will always have her in my heart, and in my memories. I will love her forever! |

It was sad news a few days ago to learn that Floye passed away just a month shy of our 50th reunion. Early on he had an interest in law enforcement. While others played ball in the street, Raymond was listing to his police scanner and riding with local officers and learning passion. JOHNSON, G. Stuart GORDON (STUART) JOHNSON Gordon (Stuart) Johnson, 69. Dedicated to family and friends. Hearth Industry icon. Born in Evanston, IL, Stuart moved with his family to Decatur, GA at a young age and became an "honorary Southerner" and was a proud American for life. Growing up during the "Greatest Generation" era, Stuart enjoyed an idyllic childhood that could easily be out of a Mark Twain novel. He and his friends were constantly on an adventure around the area. It was this independence that matured him well before his years. Those lessons learned would serve and guide him the rest of his life. He learned to be a friend, to love, respect others and God. He learned the value of hard work, dedication, responsibility, and to champion others. Family was always extremely important to Stuart. He was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. An opportunity was never missed by him to expand his family and take someone else into it. This was especially the case during the holidays; any friend was considered family and assured a seat at his table and place in his home. Stuart was an avid gardener and cultivated friendships in much the same way. He was constantly striving to help them grow and provide encouragement. All of the friends he leaves behind could never be known. His business life was dedicated to bringing families together through the celebration of fire. He represented the Robert H. Peterson Company, with honor, for a half century and is considered an icon in the Hearth Industry having proudly served on its board. Stuart mentioned on occasion that he was humbled by the lucky life that he had lived to that point; all that knew him know better than to consider it luck. Stuart passed away from a cardiac event, at the pinnacle of his career and having just completed the most beautiful round of golf in the Los Angeles hills, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Above all, he was with family and friends-to the end. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Barbara Turner Johnson. He is now survived by his current loving wife, Gloria Bach Johnson, his three children, Jo Ellen Johnson-Kuehnel, Jennifer O'Kelley and her husband Gene, Mitch Johnson and his wife Mitsy, all of metro Atlanta, step-son Brad Hornibrook and wife Leslie of Birmingham, AL, a sister Bonnie Billington of Decatur, GA, a brother Ross Johnson of Montevallo, AL, seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends that will all carry his light. Thursday, February 21st Visitation from 2:00-5:00 pm. The Clairemont Decatur Condos, 417 Clairemont Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030. Friday, February 22nd Memorial Service 11:00 am. Valley Brook Baptist Church, 1198 North Valley Brook Road, Decatur, GA 30033. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a donation be made to the American Cancer Society , www.cancer.org or mail to American Cancer Society , 250 Williams Street, Atlanta, GA 30303. John was born November 11, 1943, veterans day, so his birthday is always a holiday. After graduating from AHS he did some work traveling with Mike Herron for a while, then he joined the Air Force for 4 years. After he spent his last 13 months in Korea he finally came home to his family. He worked all day digging ditches and took a full course load at night in Marietta at Southern Tech on the VA bill. Several years later he worked his way up from digging ditches to the office ,and later became the vice president of T&B Scottdale Contractors. John left us on March 25, 1991 after a 4 year battle with ALS. He was 47 years old. John left wife Gail of the class of 1965 and 5 children all graduates of AHS. The bridge over Lake Avondale was later rebuilt by his father, brothers, and grown sons. On the front of the bridge is his signature taken from shop drawings he checked. There is also a monument to John on the clubhouse side of the bridge. John's 2 sons helped their grandfather build the floating Christmas tree on the lake and take responsibility for putting it in the lake and taking it out every year. I think you can say all our hearts are in Avondale.

Rick loved life and devoted his time to many passions. He was an incredible musician, having started playing drums in the South for greats like Sam and Dave and Otis Redding. Obituary
For many years Barbara Johnson led a good and uncomplicated life as a homemaker, mother and volunteer - and then her grandmother was murdered. The 1983 slaying of Ellen Funderburg, 87, of Decatur was a terrible blow to Mrs. Johnson and her family, and the ensuing legal process that led to a life sentence for the killer, Eddie Lee Ross, produced its share of pain, too. Rather than sink into bitterness, Mrs. Johnson resolved to fashion a good and useful result from the ordeal. "I never felt like I wanted revenge," she said in a 1987 Journal Constitution interview. I just wanted to do something to help the next (crime victim)." And so she did. She helped organize the Rockdale County Victim Witness Assistance Program and counseled many people trying to deal with grief, anger, medical bills, disabilities, and so on. She became an advocate at the Georgia General Assembly in favor of compensation for victims, the three strikes law and a statewide family violence commission. She instructed district attorneys and police across the state on treating crime victims with more sensitivity. Two former Rockdale district attorneys attest to Mrs. Johnson's effectiveness. "Barbara was one of the first victim witness coordinators in Georgia. She did a wonderful job and established a model for programs elsewhere in the state," said Robert Mumford of Conyers. "Her empathy for them was extraordinary." "She helped prosecutors understand the importance of the cases we were trying. that we were representing not only people in general but especially aggrieved people in particular." "The fact that crime victims alter became volunteers in the program speaks volumes about the effect Barbara had," Mrs. Custer said. A memorial service for Mrs. Johnson, 59 is at 11 a.m. today at Salem Methodist Church Covington. She died of cancer Monday at her Conyers residence. Cremation Society of the South is in charge of arrangements. When Mrs. Johnson learned she had terminal cancer, she decided that she wanted to fulfill a lifelong desire to tap dance. "Barbara's tenacity was amazing," said her teacher Lisa Hinely of Atlanta. "She would work and work at a routine until she got it right. She'd come to class even after having chemo. She might be low on energy at the start, but by mid class she'd be up and dancing." Survivors include her husband Stuart Johnson, two daughters, Jo Ellen Kuehnel of Munich, Jennifer O'Kelly of Conyers, a son Mitchell Johnson of Conyers, a brother Richard Turner of Loganville and four grand children. ![]() |
